This past Tuesday, YouthBuild Corpsmembers got to learn what it was like to be in a job interview by practicing with actual employers. Corpsmembers were each assigned 1-2 companies to research beforehand and prepare questions to ask during their interview.
Jason Vaughn, Program Coordinator for College and Careers and organizer of the event, stated, “For a lot of YouthBuild Corpsmembers, their next interview outside of here will be their first. This session gives them an idea of how to prepare for it.”
Company agents from TruStile Doors, MTech Mechanical, Independent Electrical Contractors, Sage Hospitality, Colorado Community College Systems and Kenny Electric all joined for the event. They were told to ask real-life questions that they use in job interviews. Afterwards, they filled out an assessment sheet of how they think the Corpsmember did.
Many of the employers were so impressed by the Corpsmembers that they discussed potentially hiring on some of the interviewees after their service at MHYC. Corpsmembers also left with a positive experience.
“Being in that setting was a different experience than I’m used to. I feel more prepared for an interview now and left thinking about questions I can ask in the future,” said Corpsmember, Richmond Johnson.
